Abstract
This article examines the early American reception of Friedrich Schleiermacher through the work of Moses Stuart of Andover Seminary, who translated and engaged Schleiermacher’s essay on the Trinity. It considers what Stuart’s reading of Schleiermacher reveals about the encounter between German critical theology and American orthodoxy in the early nineteenth century.
