Abstract
This article traces the rise of ecumenical cooperation from the founding of the Evangelical Alliance in 1846 through the Federal Council of Churches to the founding of the World Council of Churches in 1948, showing how the social crises of industrialization—urban poverty, unsafe labor conditions, child labor—drew Christians of differing traditions to work together for the good of the world.
